ROCKDALE COUNTY, GA—Twelve candidates who are seeking offices in Rockdale County officially put their names on record run on March 4, the first day of the qualifying period. Candidates seeking office for the 2024 elections have unti noon on Friday, March 8, to file their paperwork. The General primary and nonpartisan elections will be held on May 21.
In a surprise move, former Rockdale County Commissioner JaNice F. Van Ness qualified to run for Chairman of the Board of Commissioners. Van Ness is running as a Democrat and is expected to face Oz Nesbitt, Sr., in his bid for re-election for the seat. Nesbitt had not made his bid official as of 5 p.m.
Incumbents who qualified for re-election on Monday include: Magistrate Judge Phinia Aten; Tax Commissioner Tisa Smart Washington; State Rep. Angela Moore (District 91); and State Senator Tonya P. Anderson (District 43).
Two people entered the race to succeed Superior Court Judge Robert Mumford, who is retiring after serving on the bench since 1993. Judge Maureen E. Wood qualified for the seat on March 4, as well as Judge Clarence Cuthpert, former chief state court judge.
