CONYERS, GA—Three local elected officials united to celebrate Women’s History Month with their inaugural event, “Women on Purpose,” honoring the contributions of several outstanding women in the Rockdale County community.
Hosted by State Rep. Rhonda Taylor (District 92), Rockdale County Commissioner Tuwanya Smith (Post 1), and Conyers Councilmember Connie Alsobrook (District 2-Post 2), the March 16 celebration paid tribute to the resilience, leadership, and impact of women throughout Rockdale County.
The evening opened with a warm welcome from Charlotte Booker and an invocation by Sandra Jackson-Lett, setting a tone of gratitude and celebration. The Rev. Darlene Smith served as the mistress of ceremonies.
Among the 2025 honorees was Evetta B. Washington, a charter and legacy life member of the Rockdale-Newton Section of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW who has served as president and assistant treasurer for the Rockdale County NAACP, and co-chair of the Black History Month Celebration Committee.
Another honoree, Josie Dean, has transformed personal challenges into community advocacy. Despite being diagnosed with dyslexia, she has emerged as a fearless leader by founding organizations including Black Man Never Forget, Josie Dean’s Youth Activists, and The Rockdale County Think Tank. Dean remains committed to mentoring and empowering the next generation.
The event also celebrated Dr. Chante Washington, a public health scientist and leader who has spent over 20 years ensuring equitable access to healthcare and social services. As President and CEO of the Regional Impact Health Foundation, she has dedicated her career to addressing community issues including homelessness, mental health, and chronic disease management.
Highlights of the program included special recognitions, award presentations, and a dance performance by Hayden Foxworth-Hoover.
The Refuge Center and Rockdale Emergency Relief also both received Certificates of Appreciation.
As Representative Taylor, Commissioner Smith, and Councilmember Alsobrook closed the program, they called on the community to continue advocating and uplifting the women who shape Rockdale County.
