DEKALB COUNTY, GA–Super District 7 Commissioner Lorraine Cochran-Johnson has released a new episode of “The Weekly Chat” podcast. This edition explores the DeKalb Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), a one-cent sales tax that provides funding exclusively for capital projects – roads, buildings, vehicles, major equipment, and capital improvements.
Adopted by voters by referendum in November 2017, the SPLOST is expected to generate $636 million over the next six years and goes back to referendum this year in November.
“SPLOST has been extremely important in providing for the infrastructure of DeKalb,” Cochran-Johnson said. “We are seeing the effects of the program and want DeKalb residents to understand the importance and the impact of the penny.”
The Weekly Chat Podcast is available across a variety of platforms including Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, iHeart Radio, and Amazon Music. Shot in the style of a Howard Stern-type radio show, guests can listen to or watch the Podcast discussion.
The SPLOST is on target to generate $686,000 in funding for transportation and public safety projects with 15 percent for repair of general government, parks, libraries, fire stations, police stations, and facilities. SPLOST dollars can be seen at work, as on June 1, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the first vertical structure, Fire Station No. 7.
The show will feature organizations, services, local, and national conversations that are relevant to the community.
