DEKALB COUNTY—On July 1, 1st Vice President Edwina Clanton will replace Lance Hammonds as the NAACP DeKalb Branch President.
This change was necessary because Hammonds announced in a letter to the branch his plans to file his declaration of intent to run for DeKalb County District 4 Commissioner. Qualifying for this race is in 2024.
In 2022, NAACP bylaws were revised to avoid conflicts of interest. Once an officer of the branch establishes a fundraising committee or officially declares an intent to run for office, the NAACP officer or chairperson must relinquish the position during the period of candidacy.
Clanton has been a long-time member and officer for the branch. “I will work closely with our outstanding team to address the pressing issues that affect marginalized communities, such as voter suppression, educational inequality, criminal justice reform, and economic empowerment,” Clanton said. “Together, we will continue to push the boundaries, effect meaningful change, and continue the fight for equality, dignity, and justice.”
Hammonds is looking forward to becoming the next DeKalb County District 4 Commissioner, a decision that he feels is the next step in serving the people of DeKalb County. Hammonds’ resignation will take effect on June 30, 2023. Up to that date, he will work with the branch officers and the executive committee to ensure a smooth transition. Hammonds has been President of the NAACP DeKalb Branch since February 2022.
