CONYERS, GA— Five candidates, including three incumbents, are seeking to fill three seats on the Conyers City Council. The qualifying period for the municipal elections closed on Friday, Aug. 25. Here’s a look at who’s running for the four-year terms:
Incumbent Connie Alsobrook is running unopposed for re-election to the District 2, Post 2 seat. District 2, which has the city’s largest share of voters (an estimated 3,304 as of July 21, 2023), has two representatives who serve on the City Council and run alternately.. Alsobrook was first elected to the Post 2 seat in 2019, becoming one of the first black women in the Conyers City Council’s 165-year history at that time
Incumbent Gerald A. Hinesley, who was first elected in 2002 and is currently the longest-serving council member, is facing challenger Charlene “CeCe” Carr for the District 3 seat. Carr states that she is a a retired Customs inspector on qualifying documents. District 3 has an estimated 1,700 active voters, said Rockdale County Elections Supervisor Cynthia Willingham.
Incumbent Valyncia Smith will face Pamela Hicks for the District 4 seat. Hicks stated in qualifying documents that she is a master cosmetologist and pastor. District 4 has an estimated 1,930 active voters, Willingham said. Smith was first elected in 2019. Smith, along with Alsobrook, made history with their elections as the first black women elected to the Conyers City Council.
Only registered voters who live in one of the three districts will be eligible to participate in the upcoming election on Nov. 7, 2023.
