GWINNETT COUNTY, GA– Gwinnett officials on Sunday dedicated the Graves Park dog park to fallen SWAT K9 Blue.
K9 Blue was Gwinnett Police’s first canine assigned full-time to the SWAT Unit. He was shot and killed on Sept. 10, 2020, while tracking suspects who fled a stolen vehicle in Norcross. Upon locating one suspect in the woods, K9 Blue was fatally wounded as officers issued commands and the suspect opened fire.
Along with tracking wanted individuals, K9 Blue served high-risk warrants, assisted with apprehending barricaded suspects, conducted building searches and found evidence and lost property.
Gwinnett Police Chief J.D. McClure, K9 Blue’s handler Cpl. William Webb, Gwinnett County Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson, District 2 Commissioner Ku and K9 Blue’s trainer Jason Stanze unveiled permanent signage to be placed at the dog park’s entrance in Blue’s honor.
“K9 Blue bravely completed his task,” said Hendrickson. “His courage and devotion are worthy of remembrance, and we are honored that this special K9 was a part of our Special Weapons and Tactics Team.”
“This dog park dedication serves as a reminder that heroism knows no species, boundaries or fear,” said Commissioner Ku. “Let K9 Blue’s legacy be a reminder of the importance of teamwork, dedication and the bond that exists between a K9 and their handler.”
Graves Park is located at 1540 Graves Road in Norcross. The dog park is located within the park’s 70 acres.
