District 4 Commissioner’s race: Shakira Johnson, Lance Hammonds facing runoff
DEKALB COUNTY, GA—Lorraine Cochran Johnson was leading in the three-way DeKalb County CEO race with 46.28%—36,469 votes and appears headed in a runoff with Larry Johnson, unofficial results show. Larry Johnson was second in the race with 34.36%—27,075 votes. Steve Bradshaw finished third with 19.37%—15,264 votes.
DeKalb’s overall turnout was low. According to the election summary report, only 36,418 (7.23%) of DeKalb’s 503,384 registered voters participated in the May 21 election.
Cochran-Johnson said on May 22, the day after the primary elections, that she and her campaign team were very pleased that she was the front-runner in the CEO race. Results show she led 156 of DeKalb’s 191 precincts(82%) and in 54 precincts, she earned over 50 percent of the vote.
“I’m looking forward to my people coming back out so that we can finish what we started,” Cochran said. “In the runoff, I plan to run an aggressive campaign to reach all of DeKalb County residents. It’s time we reimagine DeKalb.”
Since no candidate in the CEO race received 50% plus one vote in Tuesday’s election, a runoff is expected on June 18 between Lorraine Johnson and Larry Johnson, two top contenders.
Larry Johnson said he’s energized and ready to to hit the runoff campaign trail after pausing for a bit to celebrate his birthday on May 22 by going out to brunch.
“We did well across the county,” said Johnson. “Our support across DeKalb is strong. People know that experience matters and that I have made great investments in results they can see, which has remained my message the 22 years that I have served as a county commissioner. It’s a new race, a new day.”
The DeKalb County Voter Registration and Elections Board will have its general meeting and certify the May 21 elections results on May 28 at noon. The in-person meeting will be conducted at the board’s office, 4380 Memorial Drive, Decatur. The public may attend.
