DEKALB COUNTY, GA—DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston is warning the community to beware of a warrant scam from someone claiming to be an investigator at the DA’s Office.
According to those who have reported the calls, the “investigator” advises the person they’ve called that they have a warrant out for their arrest. The caller claims that they can take care of the warrant if they pay them a large sum of money, generally $1,000 or more. The “investigator” also warns the would-be victim that they have sent deputies to their house to take them into custody, unless they pay immediately. The “investigator” then instructs them to withdraw the money from an ATM and meet them in person.
To make the calls appear legitimate, the scammers are “spoofing” the main phone number for the DA’s Office (404-371-2561).
These types of scams continue to happen all over metro Atlanta and follow a similar pattern. The scammers falsely identify themselves as being a court or law enforcement official and claim the recipient of the call must pay them a fine for missing jury duty or to avoid being arrested.
The D.A. says that if you receive one of these calls, hang up and report the incident to your local police department.
Please remember:
- Arrest warrants cannot be resolved by paying a fine.
- The DA’s Office does not process court payments or fines and will never ask you for checks, cash, gift cards or electronic payments.
