LAWRENCEVILLE, GA – A Gwinnett County jury found a Lilburn man guilty of sexually assaulting an acquaintance at gunpoint after a jealous encounter.
Santos Edgardo Amaya-Bonilla, 52, was convicted of three counts of rape, five counts of aggravated sodomy, and two counts of aggravated assault for incidents that occurred in March 2020. He was sentenced to two consecutive life prison terms.
“The victim of the defendant’s criminal acts received justice,” Gwinnett District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson said. “The jury returned a verdict in under an hour to give this victim the justice she deserves.”
On March 24, 2020, Santos Edgardo Amaya-Bonilla went to the victim’s job to get coffee and saw her talking to a male co-worker. He later returned and hit her in the chest, threatening to kill her. That evening, he pointed a gun at her and sexually assaulted her.
Four days later, Amaya-Bonilla got angry with the victim when he went to pick her up from work and she had to stay an extra 30 minutes. He hit her in the face when she got into his car, and again sexually assaulted her at gunpoint. The next morning, he attacked her in bed when she woke up.
Assistant District Attorneys Scott Estes, of the DA’s Special Victims Unit, and Chris Huslak prosecuted the case. DA’s Inv. Lashonda Williams and Victim Witness Advocate Esther Askew assisted with the prosecution, along with the Gwinnett County Police Department.
