CONYERS, GA–Disc golf enthusiasts gathered for the ribbon-cutting of the Iron Hoof Disc Golf Course at the Georgia International Horse Park (GIHP) on April 16. The 18-hole, championship course is now open and free for public use.
Volunteers, led by local disc golf course designers Donny Cook and Travis Hurt, built the course over the last few months on the Bald Rock Meadows section of the park, located off of Costley Mill Road.
Similar to the game of golf, disc golf players use a flying disc or Frisbee rather than balls and clubs. Players throw the golf disc from a tee to a target, or the hole, usually an elevated metal basket.
Disc golf is one of the fastest growing sports in the world with more than 9,800 courses worldwide and more being installed every day.
“The Georgia International Horse Park has an established reputation for passive recreation with the abundance of walking, horseback riding and mountain biking trails throughout the park,” said Conyers City Manager Kameron Kelley. “The Iron Hoof Disc Golf Course compliments that recreational mission and now gives locals and visitors another avenue for enjoying the outdoors in Conyers.”
