Stonecrest, GA—New Birth Missionary Baptist Church’s Senior Pastor Jamal Bryant will lead a town hall this evening, April 22, at 7:30 p.m. to launch the second phase of the national boycott against Target.
Bryant is calling on Blacks and other supporters to stop shopping at Target and divest from the retailer’s stock holdings, after demands were not met by this past weekend.
Bryant launched a “40-day fast” against Target on March 3 to conclude on April 19. The boycott was a direct response to Target’s decision to end its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, including a pledge the corporation made to invest $2 billion into minority businesses by 2025. Target and several other corporations removed diversity initiatives after the Trump Administration ordered the shutdown of federal DEI policies and programs in March.
Bryant said that the Black community spends $12 million a day shopping at Target and is urging that it continue challenging corporate complacency and reasserting its economic power.
On last Friday, April 18, Bryant held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Bullseye Black Market popup at New Birth, offering an alternative to shopping at Target. The weekend event, officials said, attracted some 4,000 people. The market was comprised of over 100 local vendors and some from other states offering an array of products and services.
