ROCKDALE COUNTY, GA—In Rockdale County, Keisha Sean Waites finished with a strong lead in the Democratic primary race for Georgia’s District 3 Public Service Commission seat, outdistancing two other candidates on June 17.
However, since Waites did not receive more than 50 percent of the vote statewide, she will face challenger Peter Hubbard, who came in second. Waites earned 60.37% (914 votes) in Rockdale, while Hubbard received 22.59% (342 votes). The third contender, Robert Jones, received 17.04 percent (914 votes).
The runoff between Waites and Hubbard will be held on July 15. Early voting will be held July 7-11, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The winner of the Democratic runoff will face Republican incumbent Fitz Johnson in the November general election for the district 3 seat. Johnson, who ran unopposed in the June 17 GOP primary, received 221 votes in Rockdale.
Rockdale’s final election results were certified on Friday, June 13, said Elections Supervisor Cynthia Wilingham.
Turnout for the PSC races was extremely light with only 3.04 percent (1,991) of Rockdale’s 65,449 registered voters casting ballots, Willingham’s summary report shows.
The District 2 PSC race also was on the ballot with Alicia M. Johnson running unopposed in the Democratic primary, earning 1,599 votes in Rockdale. In the Republican race, incumbent Tim Echols ended the night with 77.20 percent (193 votes), ahead of Lee Muns, who received 22.80 % (57) votes.
