DEKALB COUNTY, GA— DeKalb County Police are preparing for a countywide gun safe giveaway event on Aug. 9, providing free gun safes.
The event follows the tragic death of a 5-year-old South DeKalb boy who was accidentally shot in the chest on July 23 by his twin brother after the children found a gun in their mother’s purse. Their mother, LaNecia Bennett, 25, is now facing charges that include a count of second-degree murder.
Gun safes will be available for free at any DeKalb County Police precinct. But in light of the recent deadly shooting, DKPD plans to hold a giveaway event to ensure more gun owners have this important safety measure in their homes. Responsible firearm storage can help prevent accidental shootings and save lives, the Police Department stated.
- Gun safes will be available from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, at each of DKPD’s four precincts:
- North Central Precinct: 1960 W. Exchange Place, Tucker, GA 30084
- South Precinct: 2842 H.F. Shepherd Drive, Decatur, GA 30034
- East Precinct: 2484 Bruce Street, Lithonia, GA 30058
- Tucker Precinct: 4451 Lawrenceville Highway, Tucker, GA 30084
People must be at least 21 years old, a gun owner and live in DeKalb County. Limit one safe per household while supplies last.
