CONYERS, GA- Residents who live within the city limits of Conyers are urged to attend a town hall meeting where proposed changes to the city’s charter will be discussed. The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 6 p.m., at City Hall, 901 O’Kelly St., Conyers.
The town hall is being held to give residents the opportunity to learn more about the City Council’s proposed charter changes, ask questions, and weigh in on the matter.
A group of local legislators, led by State Representatives Doreen Carter and Rhonda Taylor, pushed for the town hall after learning there was no public input concerning the proposed charter changes. The city also has not conducted a review of the city’s charter with input from citizens, the legislators said.
Among the proposed changes, the power of the City Council would shift to the City Manager, who would have the authority to hire and fire department heads, said Connie Alsobrook, who formerly served on the City Council and is running for mayor. Currently, the city’s charter allows the City Council, comprised of five members and the mayor, to hire and fire the city manager, city attorney, and department heads by majority council vote.
“Voters elect the mayor and City Council, and ultimately, they are responsible to the citizens for good government,” Alsobrook said.
A town hall meeting flier is being shared on social media and a notice concerning the meeting is listed on the City of Conyers’ website home page under Events: https://www.conyersga.com/Home/Components/Calendar/Event/9721/64. The 28-page proposed charter amendment document, however, had not been posted on web site as of Monday night, Nov. 3.
