CONYERS, GA—Sherri Washington officially became the newest member of the Conyers City Council on Wednesday, Nov. 19, marking a new chapter in public service.
Rockdale County Chief Magistrate Judge Phinia Aten performed the ceremony, which was held at City Hall. A crowd, including several elected officials, community leaders, family members, and residents, attended the ceremony, which was held at 6 p.m.– just ahead of the regular City Council meeting. For Washington, who formerly served on the Rockdale County Board of Commissioners, the moment not only marked a transition to a new role, but a public opportunity for redemption and a chance to express her gratitude to those who helped her win the election.
Washington was sworn in to fill the District 2, Post 2 seat after leading in a three-way race in the Nov. 4 election. Since Washington secured the remainder of Connie Alsobrook’s second term on the council—about 3 years and one month—she was seated immediately following the swearing-in ceremony. Alsobrook, who stepped down as councilwoman and succesfully won the office of mayor, will take the oath of office in January 2026 to begin her 4-year term as mayor. Alsobrook was among those who witnessed Washington’s swearing-in ceremony.
Current Mayor Vince Evans welcomed those in attendance, greeting many personally before the meeting. He invited Washington to speak following the swearing-in ceremony and she thanked her supporters. She took pictures with her family members, Judge Aten and Mayor Evans.
