DEKALB COUNTY, GA —The suspect connected to a shooting that occurred inside the Decatur Library on Monday, February. 2, afternoon has been taken into custody, ccording to the Decatur Police Department.
Medicus Brown, 44, has been taken into custody and faces charges of aggravated assault with intent to murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Authorities located Brown at the Live Long Hotel, located near Memorial Drive and Rockbridge Road. Brown was wanted on charges of aggravated assault with intent to murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He is currently being held at the DeKalb County Jail.
Decatur Police have confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public. They have not stated a motive for the shooting.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:10 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 2, when officers responded to the Decatur Library at 215 Sycamore Street and found an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. The individual was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital and remains under medical care.
Out of an abundance of caution, library officials have shut down the Decatur Library through Monday, Feb. 9, as officials focus on staff support and the implementation of additional safety measures.
When the library reopens, police presence will be increased, with DeKalb County Police coordinating closely with Decatur Police to maintain a visible and proactive security posture.
In addition, DeKalb County Police will work with the DeKalb County Public Library system to conduct a security assessment of the Decatur branch, reviewing facility access, layout, and safety protocols.
“Public safety is our top priority, and we are grateful for the swift actions taken by Decatur Police to bring the suspect into custody,” said DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson. “We are working closely with our law enforcement partners and the library system to strengthen security and ensure our libraries remain safe, welcoming spaces for learning and community.”
The County also noted that in December 2025, the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners approved $1.9 million in SPLOST funding to upgrade security camera systems across the DeKalb County Public Library system, including the Decatur branch, with work expected to begin shortly.
Library staff have been offered access to Employee Assistance Program services and granted leave to support their well-being following the incident.
