ROCKDALE COUNTY, GA — Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Chi Tau Omega Chapter recently partnered with the American Red Cross to provide life-saving CPR training to local residents.
On Saturday, Feb. 7, more than 50 community members participated in the hands-on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) instruction designed to prepare individuals to respond quickly and effectively during cardiac emergencies involving family membersor coworkers.
According to the American Heart Association, about 70% of cardiac arrests happen in homes and many are not prepared for a cardiac emergency. The American Heart Association further reports that an estimated 350,000 cases of sudden cardiac arrest occur each year outside of a hospital and the survival rate is less than 12 percent. CPR can double or triple the chances of survival rate, which is why the organization offers community training that emphasizes the “3 Cs of CPR:”
§ Check the scene and the person
§ Call 911
§ Compress the chest to help maintain circulation until emergency medical professionals arrive.
The sorority acknowledged the American Red Cross and the leadership and instruction provided by Brenda Langford of the American Heart Association, as well as the support of Chi Tau Omega Chapter President Sharron Porter and Program Chair Yvonne Browder. Recognition also was extended to Committee Chair Cornelia King, Co-Chair Charice Holt Morrison, and Joy Jackson Guilford, who organized the initiative with the support of a dedicated committee of volunteers.
