GWINNETT COUNTY, GA– Gwinnett County Police fatally shot a man whom they said threatened them with a knife while they were responding to a domestic situation on Oaktree Park Court in Lawrenceville.
Nawras Mahmud, 31, has been identified as the suspect who was killed on Thursday, Feb. 19. The officer-involved shooting case has now been turned over to the GBI to lead the investigation.
The incident occurred around 3:44 p.m. when officers from the Gwinnett Central Police Precinct responded to a person stabbed call stemming from a domestic violence situation. The caller reported that someone inside the home armed with a knife was trying to stab him and that he was bleeding from the hand.
When officers arrived, they parked several houses down from the incident location, authorities said. As two officers were approaching the house, the suspect came outside holding a knife in an offensive manner above his head. The officers gave commands for the suspect to drop the knife. Authorities said the suspect, however, ignored the commands and continued advancing toward the officers. Both officers fired at the suspect in self-defense as the suspect closed the distance to the officers, the Police Department stated.
The officers rendered aid to the suspect until the arrival of EMS from Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services. The suspect was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced deceased, officials said.
