GWINNETT COUNTY, GA– This week, a Gwinnett County grand jury indicted a DeKalb County gang member accused of killing a Gwinnett County Police officer and seriously injuring another during a shootout at a hotel.
Kevin Andrews, Jr., 35, was charged with malice murder, felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault, three counts of unlawful criminal gang activity, identity fraud, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm by a felon during the commission of a crime.
A grand jury indicted Andrews on April 22 in connection with the February 2026 shooting death of Senior Officer Pradeep Tamang, 25, and the shooting and serious wounding of Master Police Officer David Reed.
“Officer Pradeep’s death is a tragic loss to Gwinnett County,” District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson said. “Gang activity is a dangerous scourge to our community, and when that unlawful activity ends in death or injury, we do everything we can to hold accountable the responsible party.”
On Feb. 1, 2026, Officers Tamang and Reed responded to a report that someone had used fraud to book a room at a Stone Mountain hotel. They arrived at the room Andrews was in and learned that he had outstanding arrest warrants.
When the officers attempted to arrest him, he shot at the officers, and they returned fire. The officers were hit. Tamang died from his injuries. Reed was seriously wounded. Andrews suffered minor injuries and was arrested.
The Gwinnett District Attorney’s Office said prosecutors will seek the death penalty.
