DeKalb County School District continues Student Assignment Project, seeks advisory team applicants

DEKALB COUNTY, GA–The DeKalb County School District (DCSD) today(Aug. 12) announced that it is continuing work on its Student Assignment Project. Officials said the district is inviting families, students, staff, and community members in six school clusters to help shape how new and expanded schools will serve students beginning in 2027.

“The Student Assignment Project has always been about one thing: shaping what’s next for student

opportunity,” said Norman C. Sauce III, Interim Superintendent of DeKalb County School District.

“We’re continuing that work in new, more collaborative ways.” 

The decision to continue collaborations follows strong community opposition to close several schools in what residents say amounts to redistricting. 

 Sauce said this fall, the district will focus on overcrowded schools in the Lakeside, Cross Keys, Chamblee, Tucker, Dunwoody, and Druid Hills clusters. All of these schools would be impacted by the new and expanded schools opening in 2027-29, which include Dresden Elementary, Cross Keys High School, Sequoyah Middle School, Sequoyah High School, Idlewood Elementary School, and the addition of a new high school cluster.

Sauce said the district will next focus on under-enrolled schools in the Towers, McNair, Cedar Grove, Miller Grove, Columbia, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. clusters in early 2027.

Community members interested in serving on a Community Advisory Team for the overcrowded

schools should submit an Interest Form between Aug.11 and Aug. 25 at dekalbschoolsga.org/sap. 

Stakeholders are also invited to participate in an online survey, focus group, and public comment sessions from now until October.
