DCSD seeks feedback on Student Screen Time Survey underway Aug. 31-Sept. 11

DEKALB COUNTY, GA– The DeKalb County School District (DCSD) is asking families and community members to share their perspectives on student screen time during the instructional day. 

As technology continues to play an important role in teaching and learning, DCSD is committed to ensuring that district-issued devices are used in ways that are balanced, purposeful, and developmentally appropriate for students.

For this survey, screen time refers specifically to the amount of time students spend using district-issued electronic devices—including Chromebooks, laptops, and tablets—for instructional purposes during the school day. This can include accessing digital instructional resources, completing assignments, practicing skills, conducting research, creating content, collaborating with others, and demonstrating learning.

The Student Screen Time Survey will help DCSD better understand how families and community members view the amount and appropriateness of screen time students experience as part of instruction. Feedback gathered through the survey will help inform the development of guidance for the balanced and purposeful use of district-issued technology in classrooms.

The survey is part of DCSD’s ongoing focus on creating healthy and productive learning environments. This survey aligns with DCSD's successful Disconnect to Reconnect initiative, which began in 2024 and is designed to help students fully engage in their learning by creating phone-free environments during the instructional day.

This approach complements DCSD’s use of district-issued technology. While digital devices can provide valuable tools for instruction, research, creativity, and collaboration, the district recognizes that technology is most effective when it serves a clear educational purpose.

DCSD encourages families and community members to participate in the Student Screen Time Survey and provide candid feedback about students’ instructional technology experiences.
