DECATUR, GA— The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has charged five inmates in connection with the death of inmate David Addo-Wright, 24, of Covington, GA.

Authorities say deputies at the DeKalb County Jail found Addo-Wright in a cell with multiple wounds on Sept. 24. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The case was turned over to the GBI as is standard protocol for in-custody death investigations concerning the DeKalb County Jail.
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday (Oct.8) announced the following inmates who have been charged in the death of Addo-Wright:
Amir Andrews, 19
Dajuhn Bryant, 20
Treonte Brintley,24
Messiah Hinson, 28
Jayden King, 22
The Sheriff’s Office said all five men are facing the following charges:
- Malice Murder
- Felony Murder
- Felony Aggravated Assault
- Possession of Items Prohibited for Possession (Felony)
- Tampering with Evidence (Felony)
Authorities have not stated a motive for the violent attack. They also have not stated why Addo-Wright was arrested and jailed. The investigation is ongoing and details remain limited, authorities said.
DeKalb Sheriff M. Maddox thanked the GBI for its work on the case and offered condolences to the Wright family.
“We appreciate the GBI for its work on this case,” said Maddox. “Our thoughts and condolences are with Mr. Addo-Wright’s family. We will continue to cooperate fully with the GBI as the investigation and prosecution move forward.”
All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, the Sheriff’s Office said in the release announcing those charged.
Speaking at a press conference last week, Attorney Mawuli Davis, who is representing the Wright family, said, Addo-Wright’s calls for help went unanswered and nearly an hour passed after the attack before anyone came to provide aid.
Davis alleged broken cell locks, missed security checks and delayed medical response at the DeKalb County Jail. Davis is demanding jail surveillance video, among other evidence as he and his team press for answers.
“The protection should have been there and it wasn’t. And that’s something that cannot be brushed over,” Davis said at the press conference. Attorneys also are looking into whether the attack was gang-related extortion.
Wright’s father said his son was killed just one day after he was arrested and booked into the DeKalb County Jail. The family had posted bond and was waiting to bring Addo-Wright home when they learned the devastating news that he was killed inside the jail.
Addo-Wright’s sister remembered her brother as a loving uncle to her children and other family remembered him as a respectful, caring, hard-working young man, and a former Clark University student.
