GWINNETT COUNTY, GA—A world of magic and fantasy unfolded at Midsummer Magic: Fae, Floats & Fun at Sanford Ranch in Snellville, GA.
Hosted by the Atlanta Black Fae Fest, the Aug. 3 event transformed a black-owned ranch into a colorful wonderland of music, artistic expression, and an array of local artisans and vendors specializing in the healing arts.
Attendees of all ages also enjoyed live entertainment provided by House Ninja Music, horseback rides, a fashion show, water games, hula hooping, poolside fun, and an art station curated by the Cloud13 Experience.
Founded by Janelle Newell of Glamour Goddess Beauty and co-founder Cloud, the family-friendly event showcased elaborate costumes and mythical personas.
“Fae, Floats & Fun was an incredible success,” said Newell. “We are thrilled to have brought together our community for a day of joy, creativity, and connection.”
Fae Fest Co-founder Cloud of CosRip magazine, said that as a father and a Black man, he was especially touched by the presence of other Black men who allowed themselves to play.
“Building a space where we flourish in community together, that to me, is priceless,” Cloud said.
The event was the perfect mix of magic and medicine through movement and music, sound bath facilitator Michelle Mann of Covington said.
“I love the concept of connecting with nature, especially for brown people. It was wonderful to see the representation of nature embodied in magical outfits,” said Mann.
Event attendee Mimi of South Fulton, who won the fashion show contest, said it was her first time attending a Black Fae Fest and that she was glad to be a part of an event that celebrates Black fairytale culture.
“It was so beautiful to see everyone rocking their natural fros, locs and braids and it’s a beautiful reminder that Black people love fantasy, anime and K-pop, too,” Mimi said.
While the event centers on people of color, everyone is welcome, said Event Manager Darius El of Darius Healing Arts.
“It’s something that is really important in our community because we need to be able to come together in magical spaces. Our people need healthy and safe spaces to be playful and to exist,” said El.
