Harris amasses historic $100M in campaign donations
ATLANTA—Jamal H. Bryant, pastor of the mega New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, announced on social media today that 3,000 pastors and other black organizations have raised millions of dollars in just a few hours in support of Kamala Harris, potentially the first woman of color to be elected as President of the United States.
“We are mobilizing an army (in support of Kamala Harris),” Bryant told listeners this morning during a Facebook live post entitled “I’m with Her.”
According to media reports, Harris amassed an estimated $81M from donors around the nation, setting a one-day record for a presidential nominee. The amount has reached over $100M since Sunday. Bryant applauded black organizations that have joined the movement and gotten behind Harris.
The donations began pouring in after Democratic President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he was halting his 2024 campaign for re-election and is endorsing Vice President Harris for the nation’s top seat. Biden dropped his bid amid health concerns including recently contracting COVID-19, and a lackluster performance at a recent debate with former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee who is seeking a second term, despite criminal charges against him.
Biden, 81, is in self-isolation as he recovers from COVID-19, but he said on Monday that he plans to hit the campaign trail with Harris.
“It is my intention to earn this nomination and to win,” Harris said on CNN during Biden’s official endorsement of her. She thanked President Biden for his support and praised him for his transformative leadership in his quest to build America’s middle class and help all Americans not only to get by but get ahead.
Meanwhile, Pastor Bryant said that 44,000 black women raised $1.3M on Sunday night during a ZOOM meeting in support of Harris. On Monday night, 35,000 black men raised $1.1M during a ZOOM meeting, Bryant said. Additionally, Historically Black Colleges and Universities(HBCU) Alumni for Kamala Harris also held a ZOOM meeting, which was filled to capacity. Bryant said that he did not yet have the amount raised from that group.
Bryant said he was at the home of Vice President Kamala Harris on Friday, where she brought together a group of black entrepreneurs to roll out a plan for black economic agenda and her commitment to black entrepreneurship. That meeting was held before President Biden announced he was dropping out of the race for re-election.
During his Facebook live post, Bryant also expressed his concern about conservative Blacks who believe that Kamala Harris is not qualified to serve as President, adding that some have “quite frankly lost their way.” Bryant said it is important for supporters to be prepared to speak about Harris’ track record. He said he has prepared 42 talking points on why Harris is in fact the most qualified person to become the nation’s next commander in chief.
Bryant pointed out, for example, that the Donald Trump Administration gave $255M in federal aid to HBCUs. The Biden Administration has given the largest amount ever, he said, a record $16 billion to HBCUs.
Bryant is urging his audience to e-mail him at jamalbryant.org to receive the 42 talking points on Kamala Harris’ accomplishments.
