The Lithonia-Davidson Library will present“Watercolors from Apples to Zebras,” a Just My Imagination workshop sponsored by the Georgia Museum of Art, on June 22, 10 a.m. to noon. The free, two-hour workshop introduces children ages 6 to 14 to the world of watercolors. Participants learn to sketch, complete a contour drawing, and paint a still life. Athens artist and teacher Jackie Slayton Methe will begin the workshop with a discussion about watercolors followed by a demonstration of brushstrokes and various techniques of layering paints. The Rockdale County Board of Commissioners is seeking the public’s input on ways to improve the quality of life in the county. Recently, the board appointed members to the Rockdale County Strategic Plan Taskforce, a team charged with collecting citizen input through a survey to improve the Rockdale community. The survey went live on the county’s website (rockdalecountyga.gov) on May 1 and will be available through June 20. The survey asks citizens and stakeholders to give feedback in the following subject areas: Public Safety, Economic Development, Quality of Life, Transportation/ Infrastructure, Education/ Workforce Development, and Transparency. “We…
Piedmont Healthcare’s initiative, “Walk with a Doc,” is now being offered in Conyers. Walk with a Doc helps the community get active and have better access to physicians. The DeKalb County School District (DCSD) will honor its valedictorians and salutatorians for the 2018-2019 school year on Thursday, May 9, at 6:30 p.m., a the Robert R. Freeman Administrative & Instruction Complex, 1701 Mountain Industrial Blvd., Stone Mountain. The graduating senior student with the highest cumulative grade-point average is designated the senior class valedictorian at each school. Sweet Auburn Works (SAW) has launched the first in a series of events and exhibitions about life on Auburn Avenue, the gateway to the black business community in Atlanta. The Atlanta Life Insurance Company’s “Windows Speak Project” offers a visual narrative of the history of the company depicted in 15 windows of the original Atlanta Life Insurance Company office buildings located at 148 Auburn Ave. The Windows Speaks exhibition, which kicked off on May 2, will remain a permanent addition to the façade of the historic buildings, which housed Atlanta Life’s offices from 1920-1980. The Conyers-Rockdale Council for the Arts, in partnership with the city of Conyers, secured the talents of students in the University of Georgia’s(UGA) Lamar Dodd School of Art’s “Color the World Bright” program to restore vintage signs on the building at 939 Railroad Street in historic Olde Town Conyers. The Pointe, built in 1925, was formerly a locally-owned furniture warehouse, a mill owned by the Georgia Railroad, an antiques store, and has been the home of the bar/tavern, The Pointe, since 2007. Georgia is among the states that use a grand jury system to decide whether to pursue criminal charges against a suspect. DeKalb County School District police have identified a suspect in the pellet gun shooting incident that hurt 10 students on Thursday, April 25, at Wynbrooke Elementary School in Stone Mountain. The shooter fired pellets at students while they were on the playground, according to authorities.
