CONYERS, GA –Long-time business owner and civic leader Brad Smith has announced his candidacy for mayor of Conyers in the upcoming November municipal election.
Praising outgoing Mayor Vince Evans for his leadership, Smith said he plans to build on a momentum that continues Conyers’ foundation of fiscal responsibility and growth, and its cohesion within the City Council and staff leadership.
Smith said that he believes that his long-standing community service and business background in Rockdale County makes him uniquely qualified to lead the city.
Smith served eight years on the Rockdale County Board of Education and during his tenure, he said Rockdale public schools were recognized as among the top school systems in metro-Atlanta. Believing in term limits, Smith did not seek re-election after serving two terms on the school board.
After graduating from Heritage High School in 1984, Smith enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving in Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Afghanistan, Iraq and throughout the world over his 20-year career.
He returned home to work for Elf Engraving, which he later purchased and merged with his family’s business to create Olde Town Awards. Smith also served 22 years as a Fireman/EMT on both a volunteer and paid basis while actively leading or participating in a multitude of civic organizations including the Conyers Downtown Development Authority; Olde Town Merchant’s Association; Conyers Rockdale Economic Development Council; Conyers Rockdale Council for the Arts; Walk of Heroes Board of Directors; and serving as a founding member of the Honor Flight Conyers for veterans.
Smith said his priorities are safe neighborhoods, strong support for families and inspiring the next generation to invest in Conyers just as he has.
