CONYERS, GA- Three Rockdale County Public Schools (RCPS) seniors were honored for their creative writing skills after entering this year’s “Conyers’ Celebration of Community” essay contest, a partnership between the city of Conyers and RCPS.
Jasonica Morgan was the first-place winner, earning a prize of $500. Kenneth Jackson, Jr. was the second-place winner of $350 and Kevina Dallas was the recipient of $150 for third place. All three students attend Rockdale County High School and were recognized at the March 19 Conyers City Council meeting by essay judges Mayor Vince Evans and Council Member Valyncia Smith.
“This year, students were tasked with writing about embracing where they live and what they thought were positive things about the city. They discussed what they thought were great attributes and opportunities, and where they believed improvements could be made concerning businesses and other opportunities,” said Council Member Smith.
The essay contest was introduced in the fall of 2024 to high school seniors at the three high schools in the city limits: Rockdale County High School, Rockdale Magnet School for Science and Technology, and Rockdale Career Academy.
Council Member Smith said the essay contest is one of several efforts the city is making to reach and connect with our younger citizens. She said that about 25 students participated this year.
“We’re hopeful for more entries next year, as well as interest in the ongoing efforts of our city government to engage with citizens of all ages,” said Smith.
