STONECREST, GA – Today, Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) hosted a roundtable discussion on the importance of Medicaid to Georgians with community experts and stakeholders. The meeting was part of a nationwide effort on Democrats’ Medicaid Day of Action to highlight the importance of the program and oppose cuts proposed to the critical program for seniors, children, people with disabilities and their families.
“Republicans in Congress want to take health care away from millions of Americans – including the elderly, people with disabilities, and our children – so they can give trillions of dollars in tax breaks to billionaires and the biggest corporations,” Congressman Johnson said. “They want to impose $880 billion or more in Medicaid cuts – which would result in millions of people losing their health care, hospital and nursing home closures, and much worse care for those who don’t lose it.”
The Congressman was joined by Nadine Johnson, Director, Care One Franchise, Inc. (COFI); Leah Chan of the GA Budget & Policy Institute; Jeff Taylor, Executive Director of MedCura; Jacqueline Bell-Smith of Angel Vision Consultants, Inc.; Collette Frix of Royal Adult Day Services, Board of Directors; member of Side by Side Brain Injury Clubhouse in Stone Mountain; Eric Slappey, a double amputee who receives Social Security and Medicaid; Brittney Newton of Voices for Georgia’s Children; and Conneva Hall from the Lou Walker Senior Center.
The roundtable highlighted the importance of Medicaid in local communities for sick children, people with disabilities, seniors in nursing homes, veterans, those with chronic conditions, mental health and other special needs. Congressman Johnson said he is committed to protecting and improving Medicaid for generations to come. Demand Congress reject Medicaid funding cuts that threaten patient care, coverage, and the viability of our entire health care system.
