CONYERS, GA—Thunderous applause filled the room as Connie Alsobrook was sworn in on Wednesday evening, Jan. 7, as the first woman–and the first black mayor —to lead the City of Conyers. The milestone makes Alsobrook only the 33rd mayor in the city’s 172-year history.
Rockdale County Chief Magistrate Judge Phinia Aten performed the historic ceremony, which drew a standing-room-only crowd that included several elected officials and community leaders who attended at the Cherokee Run Golf Club in Conyers. Alsobrook was joined by her daughter, Miranda, as she took the oath of office.
Guest speakers at the inauguration included the Rev. Aldren Sadler and Kenyawn Bennett, a third grade student at Hightower Trail Elementary School.
Transitioning from the ceremony, Mayor Alsobrook spoke with heartfelt gratitude and determination to lead the city with transparency and inclusiveness.
“This win represents a commitment by the people of Conyers to progress, fairness and inclusive leadership. It signals a desire for a city that listens to its residents and values every neighborhood. This moment is about unity, trust, and moving Conyers forward together,” Alsobrook said.
Building on her message of inclusion, Alsobrook outlined her vision for the city’s future.
“My plan is to ensure Conyers is a city of inclusion, where every resident has access to the same resources and opportunities, regardless of which side of town they on. That means transparency leadership/open door mayor and policies that uplift all communities. I am focused on building a city where everyone feels seen,, heard, supported, and safe.
Alsobrook’s latest achievement follows her historic 2019 victory, when she and Valyncia Smith became the first two Black women elected to the Conyers City Council.
Anthony Garcia Pacheco was sworn in as the new City Council member for District 1. Pacheo ran unopposed in the Nov. 4, 2025 election.
Incumbent Charlie Bryant, who represents District 2, Post 1, also was sworn in on Jan. 7. Rockdale County Superior Court Judge Nancy Bills performed both ceremonies.
Alsobrook, who served on the City Council for five years before winning the election on Nov. 4, 2025, succeeds Vince Evans, who did not seek re-election after serving on the City Council for 26 years (8 as mayor). Evans became the city’s first new mayor elected in 20 years when he won in 2017.
The swearing-in ceremony marks the second time that Alsobrook has made history in the city. She and Valyncia Smith became the first black women elected to the Conyers City Council in 2019.
