CONYERS, GA—Storm cleanup in Conyers, thanks in large part to the city’s Storm Assistance Program (SAP), is winding down after an EF2 tornado caused damage in the city of Conyers and Rockdale County on April 3. The SAP was launched on April 10 and targeted city residents on streets and in neighborhoods hardest hit by the storm, and without the means to pay for removal of downed trees and debris.
Fifty-six applications for assistance were received, with 39 of those eligible for aid within the city limits. Of the 39 remaining applications, work has been completed for 33 of the applicants. The remaining six applicants were among those hardest hit, resulting in the biggest cleanup jobs, so work continues with expected completion next week. The city had allocated $50,000 in funds towards the SAP and to date, $9,800 in funds have been expended.
The city contracted with Williamson Tree Service, a licensed tree removal company, who has been invaluable in removing trees from properties. The city also recognized representatives from Pro Cutters Lawnscapes and members of the city of Covington’s Street, Land Application and Water/Sewer teams at the May 1 Conyers City Council meeting for their assistance in donating labor to cleanup efforts in the days immediately following the storm.
“On the morning after the tornado, I was out surveying the damage. I know we have a great Public Works Department, but we had nowhere near the manpower to take care of that kind of destruction,” said Mayor Vince Evans. “Fortunately, with the help of local partners and the city’s quick response in creating the Storm Assistance Program, we’ve helped residents in need and restored order to affected areas. Kudos to everyone involved in making this program such a resounding success.”
