ROCKDALE COUNTY, GA—A crowd of supporters and VIPS on Sunday, April 14, attended a meet-and-greet for long-time Democratic Congressman David Scott (GA-13), who is running for re-election.
The reception was hosted by Rockdale County Commissioner Sherri Washington, Post 1, at Loretta’s Kitchen in Conyers, where a Southern buffet was prepared for the event.
Scott thanked Washington and the crowd of supporters for welcoming him, his wife, Alfredia, and family members, saying that he was glad to return to Rockdale, which he had represented for 10 years prior to redistricting following the 2010 Census. The 13th congressional district now includes all of Rockdale County, and parts of Clayton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Henry and Newton counties.
“I was so pleased with the turnout on Sunday. I know that Congressman Scott will continue to help move Rockdale forward from the federal level,” said Commissioner Washington.
Scott, who is in his 10th term, is one of two Democratic congressional incumbents in metro Atlanta whose districts were recently substantially redrawn in court-ordered redistricting. Congresswoman Lucy McBath’s 6th District also was reconfigured and now includes parts of Cobb, Douglas, Fulton and Fayette counties. McBath and Scott both are facing challengers in the upcoming primaries.
Scott faces six Democratic opponents in the May 21 primaries: Marcus Flowers, Mark Baker, Brian K. Johnson, Uloma Kama, Rashid Malik and Karen Rene. Republicans Johsie Cruz Fletcher and Jonathan Chavez are seeking the GOP nomination. Early voting begins on April 29.
Scott, who will turn 80 on June 27, is a ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee and a Senior Member of the House Financial Services Committee.
Outside of his political career, Scott is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity(Beta Nu), Mason and a member of the 100 Black Men of Atlanta, Inc. His bio states that he is a man of “strong faith who loves the Lord.”
