The DeKalb County School District’s new Early Learning Academy at Terry Mill Elementary School will host an open house on Thursday, June 21, 10 a.m. The school is located at 797 Fayetteville Road SE in Atlanta.
More than $3 million was invested to accommodate approximately 200 3-year-old students in pre-kindergarten at the new academy, which will open in August for the 2018-2019 school year. The academy will be offered free of charge.
“The Early Learning Academy will awaken an early love of learning for our early childhood students,” said DeKalb Schools Superintendent R. Stephen Green. “The Academy will also provide a foundation to develop skills they’ll need as they grow, such as hands-on learning, social and emotional development, and creative experience. Best of all – it’s free of charge to attend.”
Parents will soon be able to register students online at www.dekalbschoolsga.org/online-registration.

Good morning I can’t seem to reach Mr. Phillips and Ms. Knuckles via email so please send them this message. The message shows undelivered, I’m Skylar’s mom Clarinda. I wanted to take the time to chat with with them in a dual environment(via email). I’ve received countless daily notices about Skylar behavior that we’re not happy with as parents.
We need to come up with the Skylar Plan. Based on past experience the interaction has not worked.
We need to brain storm a 3 ideal strategy for Skylar. How to keep Skylar on task, class participation, and addressing appropriate behavior.
In the past what has kept Skylar on task? Things she likes, a reward system: gold star or smile face stickers. Inform Skylar if you participate you get a smile face.
Ms. Knuckles I gave you some stickers for Christmas to pass out to Skylar for good behavior.
When Skylar gets off task, give her a five second break. Count her down from five to get her back involved, then welcome her back mentally. Ask her direct questions after the count down, ie. what is the letter we are discussing?
Keep in mind, the adult mind gets off task after 8 minutes, there has to be something to keep them mentally engaged. The time to keep 3 and 4 year olds minds engaged is less than 8 minutes.
When Skylar is upset, offer your assistance; how can we make this a better day? What’s wrong? Would you like to talk about it?
We have to remember these are little people who are not yet able to articulate their emotions as we are. They still have to follow the guidelines.
Stay informed, stay positive, and stay focused on the goal. Each one, teach one.
