The DeKalb County School Board and Interim Superintendent Varsanne S. Tinsley issued the following statement regarding the passing of former School Board member Ms. Zepora Roberts:
Ms. Roberts, 78, passed away on January 21 after a long battle with cancer. She served on the DeKalb County School Board as the District 7 representative from 2002 to 2010. She was also active in the NAACP DeKalb County branch for many years, serving as education chair and vice president in addition to her instrumental work with the Georgia Head Start Association Program.
Her life’s work brought her many accolades, including the Pillars of Power Award last month as an “Unsung Hero” from U.S. Congressman Hank Johnson and as a “Living Legend” by the DeKalb County School District (DCSD) chapter of the My Sister’s Keeper program last March.
Without question, Ms. Roberts was a tireless champion for children and a pillar in the DeKalb County community. After her term with the Board of Education ended, she frequently attended Board meetings to continue her advocacy for students. She will be deeply missed by those she touched within DCSD.
The DeKalb County Board of Education and the DeKalb County School District send heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones
