Decatur, GA. [January 8, 2024]- The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People DeKalb County Branch (NAACP DeKalb) will present the 14th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade on Monday, Jan. 15, 10 a.m. The parade kicks off at Chapel Hill Middle School, 3535 Dogwood Farm Road, Decatur.
DeKalb County CEO Mike Thurmond will be this year’s grand marshal. Thurmond embodies this year’s theme as he proactively seeks to build upon a legacy of unity, reflection and action. He is widely regarded as a “turnaround expert” after changing the culture and enhancing the operations of complex organizations throughout the state of Georgia.
In celebration of the MLK holiday weekend, the NAACP DeKalb will amplify the 2024 theme “STOP, DROP, IMPACT.”
This theme is to remind all of us to STOP wasting time on activities that hurt our community; DROP the distractions that keep us unfocused; and work together to have a positive IMPACT in the community,” said Nakhia Hill, NAACP education chairperson and organizer. “This theme is to remind all of us to STOP wasting time on activities that hurt our community; DROP the distractions that keep us unfocused; and work together to have a positive IMPACT in the community.”
The parade will move from Chapel Hill Middle School and end at Martin Luther King, Jr. High School. This annual event is a celebration of the works of Dr. King and to reinforce unity, reflection, and action in the community.
