DEKALB COUNTY, GA – Broken cell windows are being replaced with metal panels in an effort to deter vandalism and illegal contraband smuggling at the DeKalb County Jail.
DeKalb Sheriff Melody Maddox said cells with broken windows throughout the 30-year-old jail are being outfitted with tamper-resistant, impenetrable metal panels, along with energy-efficient lighting to ensure a well-lit environment.
“Deliberate inmate vandalism has left us no choice but to seal all cell windows that have been broken, burned, cracked and/or completely destroyed,” said Maddox. “Not only does this situation represent a serious widespread breach of security but it also presents a threat to the health and well-being of inmates as cold winter weather is upon us.”
Maddox said the metal panels are the most viable alternative as winter approaches. When additional windows are broken, those will be sealed and covered as well, the news release stated. DKSO stated in a news release today(Nov. 8) that it expects the metal panels also will deter vandalism and smuggling.
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office has made several arrests in connection with contraband smuggling at the DeKalb County Jail. The Sheriff’s Office has reported that numerous items have been confiscated including cigarettes, drugs, food, cell phones, and dangerous objects smuggled to inmates from people on the outside through broken windows.
The DeKalb County Jail currently houses more than 1,900 incarcerated men and women, the Sheriff’s Office stated.
