DEKALB COUNTY, GA — A DeKalb County police officer is recovering after being shot during a multi-agency operation and the suspected gunman has been captured after a four-hour manhunt, authorities said on Thursday night, April 9.
The suspect, Tremagne McCluskey, has been charged with Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, in addition to prior charges of Armed Robbery and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony.
DeKalb County Police Department (DKPD) officers were assisting Cobb County authorities in South DeKalb near Glenwood Road and Shamrock Drive seeking to arrest the wanted fugitive on armed robbery charges when when he opened fire on the officers, striking one of them.
The officer was transported to a local hospital and is currently in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities are not releasing the officer’s name at this time.
“This incident is a sobering reminder of the risks our law enforcement officers face every day to keep our community safe,” said CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson. “We are grateful that our officer is in stable condition and receiving care, and we thank our officers and partner agencies for their swift response in bringing this situation to a safe resolution.”
Law enforcement authorities quickly deployed specialized units to locate McClusky. Shortly before 9 p.m., on Thursday, SWAT officers captured him near where the shooting occurred and took him into custody without further incident.
“When someone opens fire on a police officer, that is a direct threat to the safety of our entire community,” said Chief Padrick. “Our officers acted swiftly and decisively to bring this situation under control. We are thankful our officer is recovering, and we remain committed to holding those who endanger our officers and residents fully accountable.”
Officials emphasized the professionalism and coordination demonstrated throughout the incident, noting the importance of strong interagency collaboration in resolving high-risk situations.
“Our officers responded quickly and professionally under extremely dangerous circumstances,” said Director Fullum. “We are thankful that our officer is recovering and that this situation was brought to a close without further injury. We also appreciate the coordination and support of our partner agencies who assisted in this operation.”
The investigation remains active, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
