DEKALB COUNTY, GA – To accommodate walk-in customers applying for homestead exemptions, the DeKalb County Tax Commissioner’s, 4380 Memorial Drive in Decatur, will have extended hours March 25 through April 1 from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m., weekdays only. Appointments are strongly encouraged and can be scheduled online at DeKalbTax.org or by calling 404-298-4000.

Over 19,700 letters were recently mailed to homeowners who may be eligible for a senior exemption, or a basic homestead exemption for the current tax year. To avoid delays, homeowners can check their exemption status and apply online before the April 1 deadline.

“Whether you’re a new homeowner, a senior, disabled resident, disabled veteran, homeowners should check their exemption status and apply before the April 1 deadline,” said Tax Commissioner Nicole Golden. “We want to ensure that your exemption is reflected properly on your notice of assessment. Filing early minimizes confusion and avoids delays when tax bills are mailed later in the year.”

Applications can be filed online from January until the April 1; and in person year-round at all office locations during business hours. Once an exemption is granted, it automatically renews as long as the owner resides at the property, or until a different exemption is filed and granted.

How to check your exemption status:

  1. Access your property information at publicaccess.dekalbtax.org.
  2. Look for the “Exemption Codes” field. If there is no code, look for the green button in the “Owner Information” area on the page and click “Apply for homestead exemption”.
  3. If you’re a senior ages 62+ by January 1, and have an H1 exemption, you may apply online for a special exemption.
  4. If your exemption status indicates an H3, H4, H9, H10 or A6, no further action is required.

For all exemptions, eligibility, and document requirements, please visit www.dekalbtax.org/exemptions and download the homestead information sheet.

“We’re aware of programs and businesses offering services that require a fee. If it seems suspicious and too good to be true, please contact my office. These types of scams are costly for taxpayers. There is no fee for filing directly with the my office, it’s free. Please be cautious of mail, email, text message or phone calls that appear to be from the tax office,” said Golden.

For more information about homestead exemptions, how to apply or to schedule an appointment, visit the DeKalb County Tax Commissioner’s Office website atdekalbtax.org, or contact the office at 404-298-4000 or proptax@dekalbcountyga.gov for assistance.
