DeKalb tax office on Memorial Dr. reopens Oct. 2 following power outage from Hurricane Helene

DECATUR, Ga. – The DeKalb County tax commissioner’s office, located at 4380 Memorial Drive in Decatur, will reopen Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 8 a.m. for property tax and motor vehicle services. The office was temporarily closed as of Sept. 30 due to a power outage following widespread storm damage from Hurricane Helene.

The county’s facilities management team began working Monday, Sept. 30, to restore power at the central tax office. The impacts from the storm damage, compounded by equipment failure and repair work to an outdated building, caused operational delays before the first installment deadline for property taxes.

“Despite the temporary office closure, we are continuing to work diligently to serve taxpayers and meet the deadlines required of this office,” said Tax Commissioner Irvin Johnson. “We understand these are especially frustrating times, and I ask the public to pack their patience as services are restored at the Memorial Drive office location. This will ensure that staff can continue to work safely and professionally to provide quality service.”

To mitigate service delays, the office redirected taxpayers to the Clairmont Road and South DeKalb mall satellite office locations for property tax and motor vehicle walk-in services. Additionally, customers were reminded to consider kiosk services at participating Kroger stores, as well as online, drop box and phone options to save time and avoid delays.

“I am proud of this office and the expanded service options we’ve implemented since 2016. We offer ways to make tax payments or renew vehicle registrations from the convenience of your home, or while you’re out at the grocery store,” said Johnson. “Providing the highest level of customer service continues to be a top priority as we leverage technology to enhance the way we serve taxpayers. This office is better positioned to focus on sustainable operations while enhancing overall customer experience.”

Property owners can continue to make tax payments online at publicaccess.dekalbtax.org, by phone at 770-336-7500, or drop box at any of the three tax commissioner’s office locations. There is NO FEE for paying by e-check online or by phone.

The first installment deadline for property taxes was Sept. 30; the second installment is due Nov. 15. Bills for City of Atlanta properties in DeKalb are due Nov. 15.

Vehicle owners may go online to renew their registration, pay insurance fines, check their vehicle title and insurance status, change their vehicle registration address, and more at https://eservices.drives.ga.gov.
