ROCKDALE COUNTY, GA— Janice Foot, a former special education teacher at C.J. Hicks Elementary School in Conyers, was arrested this week for assaulting two 5-year-old students who were in her class.
The Conyers Police Department said Foot, 58, of Lithonia, was arrested on a warrant and booked into the Rockdale County Jail on Dec. 12. Foot was charged with two counts of Cruelty to Children in the First Degree, Police Lt. Quantavis Garcia stated in a Dec. 15 news release.
Conyers Police detectives reviewed audio and video recordings that showed Foot forcing the head of one of the children against his desk to prevent him from viewing a film that the rest of the class was watching as punishment for his behavior.
Foot also assaulted a second 5-year-old child in the same manner. Both students had bruising and scratch marks visible on the side and backs of their heads from the assault, according to the investigation.
The Police Department began its investigation after receiving a complaint from the boy’s parents on Nov. 8. The family contacted the Police Department after being told by the school administration that Foot had been terminated for assaulting the child.
The initial report was turned over to detectives to evaluate Foot’s actions and determine if criminal prosecution was appropriate, Lt. Garcia stated.
Foot was released on a bond after her arrest, according to jail records.
