ATLANTA – State Rep. Doreen Carter (D-Lithonia) will participate in the Piano Keys for Christ 2023 Christmas Piano Recital on Sunday, Dec. 10, 4 – 6 p.m., at the Rockdale County Auditorium in Conyers.
Rep. Carter will be performing the piano during this event. This will be her first public performance playing the piano.
“I’m excited and a little nervous at the same time,” said Carter. “I’ve been playing piano only since July.”
Carter said she has wanted to learn to play the piano for years and finally decided to try her hand at learning after meeting Gayle Bates, a piano instructor at a business networking event in Conyers.
“I started using my lunch break for the lessons then I shifted to Saturdays because of my busy work schedule. I would play at night at home and I just kept working at it,” Carter said.
Carter said piano is the third instrument that she has learned to play. She attended Jackson State University in Jackson, MS on a music scholarship, where she played the trombone and bassoon.
“It’s really cool playing an instrument. The main thing with playing the piano is that I had invested in a piano a few years ago and I wanted to make sure it did not just become a piece of furniture in my house,” said Carter.
She said she will be playing a Christmas selection at the recital.
Established in 2006, Piano Keys for Christ offers piano lessons to students of all ages across the state of Georgia. The organization is committed to serving the fine arts community by providing piano lessons to any student in Georgia who has an interest in learning to play piano.
