The new office, now open at the New Black Wall Street Market in Stonecrest, Georgia, will provide dedicated office space for constituents to keep in touch with their state lawmakers. Plans are to initially open the office three days a week and rotate Saturdays. Officials said at the event that they are still working out the schedule and staffing details.
Several elected officials attended the celebration including Congressman Hank Johnson, who represents Georgia’s Fourth Congressional District, and his wife, DeKalb Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson; Delores Crowell, intergovernmental affairs manager for DeKalb CEO Michael Thurmond; Stonecrest Mayor Jazzmin Cobble, Mayor prom tem George Turner, and Stonecrest City Council members Tammy Grimes, Alecia Washington, Tara Graves and Terry Fye.
State Representatives Karla Drenner (D-Avondale Estates) and Viola Davis (D-Stone Mountain), who serve as the Legislative Delegation’s chair and vice chair respectively, said the new offices will provide accessibility and empowerment to constituents.
“Today marks a historic moment as we open the doors of the DeKalb County House and Senate Constituent Services Office at the New Black Wall Street,” said Drenner. “As Chair of the DeKalb House Delegation, I am honored to pioneer this initiative, paving a path never before traveled in our county’s history. Let this be a beacon of accessibility, advocacy, and empowerment for all our constituents. Together, we embark on a journey of service, solidarity, and progress.”
“We are excited to open the doors of our new Constituent Services Office to the residents of DeKalb County,” said Rep. Davis. “This office represents our commitment to serving the needs of our community and providing a centralized hub for constituents to voice their concerns, seek assistance and access valuable resources. We encourage all members of the community to join us for this special occasion. Together, we can foster greater collaboration, understanding and progress for the benefit of DeKalb County and its residents.”
State Rep. Rhonda Taylor (D-Conyers) also praised the opening of the office, which has been two years in the making.
“This opening has been a two-year initiative and I am so thrilled to have been a part of bringing it to fruition,” said Taylor. “Constituents will have direct access to those who represent them in DeKalb and obtain much needed resources. This opens the door for even more community engagement and will better aid in providing services. I can’t wait to see the office full of citizens benefiting from this remarkable opportunity in collaboration with The New Black Wall Street.”
