WASHINGTON, D.C. – On June 21, the winner of Congressman Hank Johnson’s (GA-04) 2022 Congressional Art Competition, Christopher Ramos of Newton County, was honored in Washington, D.C. as part of a national reception to honor arts winners from across the country.
Ramos, a freshman from Newton High School now a rising sophomore, was recognized for his piece titled “bereavement.” Ramos was awarded the grand prize for the Fourth Congressional District, which is a $12,000 scholarship to the Savanah College of Art & Design (SCAD).
Ramos’s “bereavement” will be displayed in the Capitol in Washington, D.C., where it will hang with hundreds of other award winners from around the country for a year.
Each year, this national competition calls upon high school students of all backgrounds and skillsets to submit their art for the chance to showcase their winning pieces in their congressional district as well as in the U.S. Capitol. Participating students win scholarships and other prizes.
“I want to congratulate Christopher and his entire family for this tremendous honor – the scholarship of course but also that his work “bereavement,” which is going to be displayed here on Capitol Hill for the next year. He and his father, Francisco, are wonderful ambassadors for the Fourth District and I’m proud that they were honored in our nation’s capital in this way,”said Congressman Johnson.
This year’s Fourth District art competition saw a total of 34 submissions from across high schools in DeKalb, Rockdale, Newton, and Gwinnett counties.
