Gwinnett BOC approves contract to create master plan for Park Place community, Stone Mountain Tennis Center site

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA– The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners (BOC) has moved another step closer toward redeveloping the Park Place community and Stone Mountain Tennis Center, a key gateway to the county.

Commissioners on Tuesday, Aug. 20, awarded a $217,000 contract to Sizemore Group, LLC for the development of a masterplan that will guide the area’s future.

The comprehensive master plan will assess existing conditions and involve community feedback to develop specific land use, transportation, and open space recommendations. Priorities include transit-oriented development, housing diversity and strategic redevelopment. The master plan will be funded by proceeds from the sale of the tennis center site.

County officials say they will receive input from residents and stakeholders throughout the process to ensure the master plan aligns with the community’s vision and priorities.

The County acquired the 26-acre Stone Mountain Tennis Center in 2016 for approximately $5.6 million as an opportunity to revitalize the underused site and stimulate redevelopment in one of the major gateways into Gwinnett County. Through a competitive solicitation process, the County partnered with Fuqua Acquisitions II, LLC, to redevelop the property.

“Gwinnett is committed to promoting sustainable and inclusive growth, and the Park Place community is a critical part of that vision,” said Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson. “By creating a master plan that emphasizes transit-oriented development and housing diversity, we are laying the groundwork for a vibrant future for this portion of our county.”

“The sale of the Stone Mountain Tennis Center site earlier this year marked an important step forward in redeveloping this area,” said District 2 Commissioner Ben Ku. “Our goal is to continue this work by developing a path forward that thoughtfully considers the community’s needs and opens up new opportunities for the future of Park Place.”

The board also approved the purchase of eight acres of property along East Park Place Boulevard near Stone Mountain. This property, owned by Jubilee Christian Church International, Inc., is located within the Park Place Tax Allocation District and the Evermore Community Improvement District. A Tax Allocation District is a designated area where future increases in property tax revenues are used to support redevelopment projects within that district. The acquisition of the property along East Park Place Boulevard will support the future implementation of the Park Place Master Plan.
