LAWRENCEVILLE, GA – Three gang members were convicted Tuesday of murdering a New Orleans man in a violent 2022 carjacking attempt.
Josiah Hughley, Jr., 22, David Jarrad Booker, 23, and Miles Collins, 22, were each found guilty of two counts of felony murder, aggravated assault, hijacking a motor vehicle, 10 counts of violation of the Georgia’s Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony in the July 2022 shooting death of 30-year-old Bradley Lamar Coleman.
The three men were each sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole plus 145 years consecutively.
“We continue to mourn this unconscionably tragic death, and hope this verdict and sentencing brings Mr. Coleman’s family justice and solace,” Gwinnett District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson said. “Gang activity and the violence it invites has no place in the lives of our young people.”
On July 10, 2022, Coleman was pumping air into his tire at a Quik Trip station in Peachtree Corners when the three professed Blood gang members pulled the rented Mercedes-Benz sedan they were in next to Coleman’s car. The trio was attempting to steal Coleman’s Dodge Charger to increase their gang status.
Hughley got into the driver’s seat of the Dodge and tried to drive off but hit another car that was passing by and couldn’t pull away. When Coleman confronted Hugley, Hughley shot Coleman once in the head.
During the trial, video footage from the convenience store showed Booker approaching Coleman’s car with his own weapon drawn as Hughley fired. Hughley reached into Coleman’s car and took Coleman’s gun and he and Booker ran back to the rental that Collins drove to get away.
Investigators testified that they were able to track the three men through their cell phones. Police also learned that Hughley sold the handgun he stole from Coleman’s car.
Chief Assistant District Attorney John Melvin and Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney John Williams prosecuted the case. DA’s Investigators Kelly Perkins and Brian Ray, and Victim Witness Advocate Armando Perez assisted with the case. Gwinnett County Police Department Det. A. Harrison and Det. Adam Post with the department’s gang unit were invaluable to prosecuting the case.
