GWINNETT COUNTY, GA– The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners acted on several initiatives during its Oct. 15 meeting. A recap of what was approved follows:
Gateway monuments to welcome visitors
The Board of Commissioners approved a contract with Rite Lite Signs Inc. for the construction of two illuminated gateway monuments at key roadways leading into the county. One monument will be situated near the northbound exit ramp of I-85 at Jimmy Carter Boulevard, and the other will be at the northeast corner of Centerville Highway and Riverlake Way.
The Board also approved a maintenance agreement with the Georgia Department of Transportation to support the construction, landscaping and ongoing maintenance of the signs since both monuments will be located within the state’s right of way.
State plans new interchange at State Route 316
The Georgia Department of Transportation is set to construct a new interchange at the intersection of State Route 316 and Williams Farm Drive. The design includes proposed roundabouts at each interchange ramp, aimed at improving traffic flow. If roundabouts are chosen, the County will support the implementation of a Local Government Lighting Project Agreement to cover future maintenance and operational costs of street lighting at the new interchange.
Support for lifeguard training program continues
Northside Hospital Gwinnett will continue to provide support towards free certification training for Gwinnett Parks and Recreation’s lifeguard training program. This initiative is one of the largest lifeguard training programs in the state. More than 300 lifeguards have successfully participated in the program each year.
Water main replacements to improve infrastructure
The Board approved a project to replace more than two miles of water mains along Pond Road and adjacent neighborhoods in unincorporated Gwinnett County. The existing water mains are more than 40 years old and have a history of breaks. This project is part of the County’s program to replace aging water infrastructure, ensuring the reliability of the water distribution system in the area.
