GWINNETT COUNTY, GA– The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has launched a probe into a police-involved fatal shooting that took place on Oct. 30 as authorities seek to identify the deceased suspect.
The Gwinnett County Police Department responded to a pursuit around 11:30 p.m. in the area of the 5700 block of Peachtree Industrial Blvd. regarding a vehicle that was involved in an incident in another jurisdiction. During the encounter, the suspect rammed a marked patrol vehicle, disabling it, and fled the area.
Additional officers located the vehicle and initiated a pursuit. The pursuit came to an end when the suspect’s vehicle crashed. The suspect then exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Officers pursued the suspect and issued multiple loud verbal commands, but the suspect failed to comply. An officer attempted to deploy a taser, however, it was unsuccessful.
During the foot pursuit, the suspect pulled a firearm, prompting the officer to to shoot, striking the suspect, the Gwinnett Police Department said in a news release. The suspect fell to the ground where he then turned and pointed the firearm at the officers, at which point additional shots were fired at the suspect, police said.
The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The suspect’s identity is unknown at this time.
No officers were harmed during this incident.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has assumed responsibility for the investigation and will provide updates as additional information becomes available.
