LAWRENCEVILLE, GA – Career criminal prosecutor and nationally recognized legal author Michael Scott “Mike” Carlson joins the Gwinnett District Attorney’s Office today as Executive Assistant District Attorney. Carlson will lead the agency’s Appellate, Complex Case, and Training divisions.
Carlson has practiced law for 33 years and has been devoted to public service since 1997. He has also co-authored several annually updated books, including “Carlson on Evidence,” and has been an adjunct professor at Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School and Emory University Law School. Atlanta-based legal periodical the Daily Report in 2019 listed Carlson as a “Georgia Trailblazer” for his commitment to the positive development of the justice system in the state.
“We are excited to have Mike’s extensive knowledge of the law and his experience as a criminal prosecutor in this office,” Gwinnett District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson said. “Many of our prosecutors have learned either directly from him or benefitted from the information in one of his publications, and we expect that he will, among other things, bring an added measure of professionalism.”
Carlson comes to the Gwinnett DA’s Office after spending four years as the Executive District Attorney, Major Crimes Division, with the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office. He frequently lectures to attorney and judge groups across Georgia on the law of evidence, trial practice and procedure.
Carlson also served as Legal Service Director and Ethics Officer for the Georgia Bureau of Investigations, Chief Assistant District Attorney for the Cobb District Attorney, Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney for the DeKalb District Attorney’s Office, Senior Assistant District Attorney for the Fulton District Attorney, and Assistant District Attorney with the Augusta District Attorney’s Office. Prior to entering public service, Carlson was an associate attorney at Hull, Towill, Norman, & Barrett (now Hull Barrett, PC) in Augusta.
