ATLANTA– Georgia District 53 Rep. Sheila Jones along with several state lawmakers and local commissioners will gather to recognize June 12 annually as Women Veterans Day in Georgia as decreed in State House Resolution 978.
To kick off this observance, an inaugural celebration honoring women veterans will take place on Monday, June 13, 10 a.m. at the Georgia State Capitol, Room 341, 206 Washington St. SW, Atlanta.
“Nearly 93,000 women veterans call Georgia home,” said Rep. Jones. “Many states already recognize these truly heroic and brave women annually and it is time Georgia acknowledge them officially with a day worthy of their sacrifice.”
Historically, women have served in many noncombat positions in various branches of the U. S. Armed Forces, despite not being granted the right to fully serve in direct ground combat roles until 2013.
“DeKalb County alone is honored to have about 8,200 women veterans as residents,” said DeKalb District 7 Commissioner Lorraine Cochran-Johnson. “We owe our current and past servicewomen an indescribable debt of gratitude and Women Veterans Day in Georgia is a wonderful opportunity to express our appreciation.”
The celebration will include remarks and presentations from key elected officials, as well as an official photo on the Georgia State Capitol rotunda steps and a reception. All women veterans residing in Georgia are encouraged to attend.
