DEKALB COUNTY, GA—Larry Johnson and Lorraine Cochran Johnson officially entered the race for DeKalb County CEO, filing their qualifying papers on Thursday, March 7.
The two Johnsons, who are unrelated, along with Steve Bradshaw, are vying to succeed Michael Thurmond, whose term expires at the end of 2024. All three Democrats in the CEO race have served together on the 7-member Board of Commissioners. Their bids for higher office will mean three veterans are leaving the board.
Larry Johnson and Lorraine Cochran Johnson had to vacate their seats this week to qualify to run for DeKalb CEO. Because their four-year terms don’t expire until January 2027, a special election must be held to fill their seats. The special election is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
Steve Bradshaw, however, will be able to serve out the remainder of his term as he runs for CEO because his 4-year term expires at the end of 2024. Three candidates had qualified for Bradshaw’s seat as of March 7.
Larry Johnson, who represented District 3 and was the longest-serving member of the BOC, assumed office in 2002. Bradshaw , who represents District 4, assumed office in 2016. Cochran-Johnson, who represented Super District 7, assumed office in 2019.
The qualifying period ends at noon on Friday, March 8.
