Elijah Malik Hyams and Kyla Aolani Milling, both 32, were found guilty last week of two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of terroristic threats, first-degree felony criminal damage to property, second-degree felony criminal damage to property, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony for shooting out the windows of the victim’s car in September 2021. Both Milling and Hyams were sentenced to 15 years in prison.
“The defendants could have killed or seriously injured someone,” District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson said. “It is a blessing that the victims were unharmed. The use of guns is endangering the safety of our community.”
On Sept. 7, 2021, Hyams and Milling went to the Lawrenceville home where Hyam’s ex-girlfriend lived with her siblings. The couple pulled up to the home in Hyams’ BMW SUV and shots were fired into the car in front of the house where his ex-girlfriend’s brother and the brother’s girlfriend were sitting. The gunfire shattered the rear window of the car, struck the brother’s mobile phone and hit the front windshield. Neither person sitting in the car was hit by the gunfire.
Prior to the incident, the defendants had sent harassing communications to Hyams’ ex-girlfriend, and both defendants had threatened the victims, saying they were coming to fight, according to the investigation. Police were called to the scene and given a video recording of a phone call from Hyams threatening the victims. Investigators also were given a recording of a call from Millings made after the shooting in which she said she pulled the trigger.
Hyams was arrested and admitted to police that he went to the scene with Millings to fight. He told police that he fired a shot into the air to break up a fight. The details of his story were inconsistent, however. Millings was arrested later and refused to speak with the police.
The jury returned the guilty verdicts in under an hour.
Assistant District Attorneys Gaby Benghiat and Paul Barnhill prosecuted the case with assistance from Investigators Richard Escher and Ron Thompson and Victim Advocate Sonia Davis-Bey. The Lawrenceville Police Department also assistance in closing this case.
